In a preclinical study, hepatotoxin’s exposure given to animals along with Embelia ribes.It has been observed that chances of liver cell damage are lesser in Embelia treated animals compare to non Embelia treated animals.The measurement Critatia was the level of SGPT in blood stream.There was no hepatocellular necrosis seen in Embelia treated animals.Embelia contains the benzoquinone compound Embelin , which has been proven for its various medicinal activities.Free radical scavenging reactions and antioxidant activity of Embelin has been studied and found that embelin scavenges free radical , inhibits lipid peroxidation and restores impaired Mn-superoxide dismutase in liver cells.
The combination of Embelia ribes with other herbs like Tecoma undulata, Phyllanthus urinaria,Taraxacum officinale, Mineral salts, Nyctanthes arbortritis and Terminalia arjunae enhances the efficacy and treating potential of “Kamalahar”.
